A Global MBA graduate’s journey from pharmacist to leader

Explore graduate Chinedu’s journey of leadership growth, career advancement, and personal transformation through Hull Online's Global MBA.

Many people think an MBA is only about business theory or expanding your network. For many graduates, it’s something far deeper — a process of personal transformation. But what does that really look like when you are balancing a demanding career, family responsibilities, and two years of intensive study?

Chinedu Ezeilo knows the answer. A trained pharmacist from Nigeria, he transitioned into the business side of pharmaceuticals and eventually became an international account manager for a global company in the UK. Along the way, he kept asking himself a single question: What is my value?

In this conversation, Chinedu shares how Hull Online’s Global MBA helped him find that answer. From the first Leadership Catalyst module to applying academic learning directly in the workplace, he explains how the course reshaped his leadership style, improved his career prospects, and even changed the way he approaches family life.

Chinedu, could you tell us a little about yourself?

Chinedu: I’ve just graduated from the Global MBA, and it’s been an incredible journey. It’s changed how I think about management — not just of resources, but of people, finance, and even my own outlook on life.

Right now, I’m an international account manager with a UK-based pharmaceutical company that exports to over 89 countries. I manage business across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.

I’m also a husband and father, so I know what it’s like to juggle work, family, and study. That’s why I’m keen to share my story with anyone wondering if this programme is worth it.

What made you decide to study for an MBA, and how did you manage it alongside work and family?

Chinedu: My first degree was in pharmacy, and I practiced as a pharmacist in Nigeria before moving into the business side of pharmaceuticals. My family background is in trade, so business came naturally to me — but I knew I needed academic knowledge to sharpen my skills and stand out.

In my role, selling medicines isn’t just transactional. There’s an emotional element. You’re working with governments, private markets, and customers who may have a personal connection to the product. That’s where leadership comes in. I kept asking myself, What is my value?

When I moved to the UK, I joined my current company to develop its African, Caribbean, and Middle Eastern markets. The demands were huge, but so was my hunger to add value to myself academically. I knew I couldn’t leave work, so the online Global MBA was ideal.

The course adviser I spoke to was encouraging. She showed me how the flexibility of online study meant I could fit learning around my job and family. I would need to commit, but my performance wouldn’t be judged on attendance — it would be about how much I could apply and reflect on.

The first module, Leadership Catalyst, was a turning point. It gave me tools to define myself, understand my personality, and answer that question: What is my value?

From there, I started applying what I learned straight into my work — improving communication, managing my team more effectively, and standing out among my peers. The changes were noticeable not just at work, but at home too.

Now that you’ve graduated, how has the MBA influenced your career and future plans?

Chinedu: Even before I graduated, I was approached by several companies for senior roles. I turned many down because at this stage in life, I wanted to spend more time with my young son. The MBA helped me be honest about my priorities.

My current company has been incredibly supportive. Many of my assignments focused on real challenges they faced, and I shared the research with them — work they would otherwise have had to pay for. They recognised the value I was adding.

For now, I’m focused on applying my MBA learning to business development within my company while enjoying family time. But I know I have the skills and confidence to take on senior leadership positions when the time is right.

The MBA didn’t just increase my value in the market — it gave me the clarity to decide when and how I want to use it.
